Sinnoh had a victory road. Poni Canyon is Alola's victory road because it serves the same purpose from a design standpoint. It's a massive dungeon filled with powerful enemies that is a story requirement to reach the final boss of the game's story (the Elite Four). The fact that it is also where you meet the box legendary and take out the leader of the evil team is just streamlining.
