Lava Plume is the only thing it has over Lampent(superior Flash Fire NFE), so play to it's strengths. It also has Eruption, but Solar Power Charmelon,Nasty Plot Monferno, and Life Orb Magmar have less barren movepools and more firepower than Quilava does. Its a shame Body Slam is not legal with Flash Fire, gambling for Paralysis would make a nice alternative for Toxic.

Quilava is still painfully outclassed, but can still put some work.

You can most definitely use any Pokemon competitively even your bro there, just don't bitch about it when you get wrecked all the time.
