Gen 1 - simple, no clutter, catching 'em all was a realistic goal, battling people was simple because the game didn't have 800 pokemon with 800 moves and items, abilities, EV spreads, natures and all that crap that made modern competitive so convoluted

Gen 2 - improved everything that gen 1 did, added a bunch of features that nobody asked for but that everyone takes for granted today, added the female character option, designs fit well with gen 1 pokemon, catching them all was still reasonable

Gen 6 - finally could play with a character with my skin color, PSS, super training, Destiny Knot, Friend Safari and horde battles made competitive less autistic and more accessible, first 3D gen and mega evolution was my favorite new mechanic introduced in the series.

But why place Gen 4 so low? I'm not really a Gen 4 fan myself, but it introduced/improved many features such as the physical/special split, the GTS, Pokemon importing from previous gen, etc. Connectivity, while somewhat flawed compared to the newer gens in its performance, was expanded with the DS's wireless options and native support for Wi-Fi, and postgame was good, especially in Platinum and HG/SS. Granted, the games weren't optimized well and everything from battles to saving to surfing was slow as fuck, but it did a lot compared to, say, Gen V, whose games are also on the DS and had less achievements.

No.1 Gen 5 Best story, best characters, best approach to "3rd version" (sequels), best region, very bold (only new mons untill post game in BW), one of the best pandering features in the history of Pokemon (PWT). I could say so much more

No.2 Gen 4 (aka mainly Platinum) Very specific and big region, fairly long game with pretty big post game (and a Battle Frontier). Probably the best villain in the series. one of the best Pokemon leagues. Great music. The legendraies have lot of thought and care to them (almost each has its own area)

No.3 Gen 6. Both XY and ORAS showed the richness of existing Pokemon in Pokemon franchise with XY having 450 out of 721 mons in main game (plus Friend Safari) and ORAS having many extra mons closer to the end game and TONS of legends in it. Some off the greatest features in the entire franchise were introduced: Amie, Super Training, DexNav, Soaring, Customization, QR Secret Bases. Same goes for new mechanics and additions like Fairies, Megas and Hordes. The generation was pulled down by rather weak post game and no Z (or XY2)
