If a studio other than GameFreak made a Final Fantasy styled franchise that coexisted with the mainline games, they'd sell damn well, maybe even as much as the normal series.

Retro Studios is a first-party Nintendo developer, Nintendo completely owns them.

They don't own Game Freak at all, Game Freak is just an affiliate.

They do, however, possess joint ownership of The Pokemon Company with Game Freak and Creatures Inc.

Game Freak develops games for other systems, but they're not allowed to make Pokemon games for anything but Nintendo systems due to Nintendo's partial ownership of the brand.
