In gen 1, it honestly wasn't that terrible. There were so few moves that the odds of coming up with something good were much better. As later gens have given literally hundreds of status moves that do literally nothing, and an ember for every type, and a dozen different ways to to pitiful normal type damage, the odds are just against you. Calling wild card in gen 1 meant you had a reasonable chance of your Snorlax suddenly using a water move on that Golem.

Just use Z-Metronome. At least if you get LD/Memento/Allahu Snackbar you have a choice to not use it.
