The anime just isn't as popular as it used to be. You look back at ratings from a decade ago from either AG or DP, and they start off with 9's, 8's and 7's for most of its run...and only decline in the later half. I think AG's lowest rated episode was a 6, it never went below that.

Meanwhile now SM gets regularly in the 3.0's and hasn't had a rating above 4.4. Its doing even worse than the first 8 XY episodes did back in 2013.

Its interesting they had both Dawn and Serena get into the finals of their first regions, yet May had the most similar progression to Ash.

May loses in the Top 8 in the Hoenn GF and loses to her main rival Drew. Then in the Kanto GF she only makes it to the Top 4, barely beating Drew by points and then getting creamed by Solidad similar to how Ash was by Tobias. While we don't know how did beyond that in the Johto GF or wherever else she goes, the writers had May loses to the early rounds after two regions worth of quests.

I guess May really was influenced by Ash's battle style, she can't make it to the finals without losing early.
