Before Gen 7, the game would generate eggs ahead of time, so soft resetting didn't affect the outcome, but changing parents would. Somebody discovered that as of Sun and Moon, you can change parents and as long as certain requirements were met, the game won't reroll the egg. This means you can breed Magikarp to get certain IV inheritance like Father/x/Mother/Mother/Father/Mother or even shininess and then reset and swap the Magikarp for another Pokemon and in the same number of eggs you would get the exact same IVs and Shininess.

Caught a shiny Smeargle like 2 hours into the game, and five minutes ago I found this faggot in my pokepelago. Shinies feel more easy to come by this gen for sure.

It's still worth it to switch if you're just breeding for shininess or Nature. Since Magikarp hatches in 1280 instead of 5120 like the starters, you can hatch eggs at 4x the rate. Just make sure that when you find out how many eggs in your shiny is, you reject an egg, take an egg, then reject an egg, until you've collected the right number of eggs.

if you were doing a pokemon like cubone (same gender rate as magikarp) instead of tepig you wouldn't need to reject any eggs

after a chain of 70 you have 3 extra rolls for shiny.. so 1/1024 with charm. the chain ends at 255 for technical reasons

rates without charm aren't important bc if you cant bother to catch 300 pokemon you probably arent patient enough to get a shiny.
