Honedge is great though. Doublade and Aegislash don't live up to it at all. Doublade is basically the same thing, but with two swords, slightly less appealing colouration and less detail on the scabbards, and Aegislash drops almost everything that was charming about the first two stages completely.

Agreed, except I don't mind Aegislash. Doublade is the weakest link design-wise, Honedge is the best. Aegislash would have been better if the shield was also a scabbard for consistency.
