I actually don't mind Toucannon. It's just something of a non sequitur in its evolution line which never goes down well, despite the precedence of Dragonite, Octillery, etc.

You're being obtuse for the sake of it.
"Overdesigned" means there's too much shit thrown onto a simple form. There's a reason the majority of Pokémon fans prefer Infernape over Emboar. They both have lots of patterns and visual noise going on, but Emboar is a much simpler round form with patterns thrown onto it.

People don't complain about "simplistic" designs, they complain about BORING designs. Toucannon is an extremely boring design, or "generic" if you prefer that term. Whether that constitutes a bad design or not is up to you. I believe if it were a single stage Pokémon it would have been better-received.

Complex designs like Gyarados and Haxorus are well-received. They're not overdesigned.
Simple designs like Wigglytuff and Solosis are well-received. They're not boring.

Pokémon that are hated are generally Pokémon with simple forms and a lot of shit going on at the same time. People hate Bewear and Magmortar and it's not because they're genwunners.

"overdesigned" is literally a jargon word. It's only ever used when people want to sound smart.

I'd understand if you used something like cluttered to describe what you're talking about but it doesn't accurately describe your comparison as Infernape is a far more cluttered design due to it's thin, gangly shape.

Also Magmortar doesn't really fit your description since it's features are all clear and distinct from one another. In fact it's a fairly simple design, the real reason people don't like it is because it doesn't feel like a follow on from the rest of the Magmar line, it's very much just a tacked on evo without any regard for the previous mon and the same goes for most of the cross gens for that matter.

Same deal with Bewear simple and distinct but I don't think anyone actually hates it.

Couldn't possibly disagree with you more. Magmar looks like shit and Magmortar, who looks like shit too, looks exactly like the perfect evolution for it. It gets fatter (Magmar already had that stupid belly), still has the dumb duck lip/beak/thing, even more ass-faced, the "sleeves" face out now and are shaped like cannons, etc.
Most genwunners just hate to deal with the fact that their shitmons look like shit. Therefore they were given shitty designed evolutions.

Wut? Magmortar is pretty much "the same but fatter". The one point where it switched ways was going from spitting fire from its mouth to doing so from its hands. Which could be quite a deal I admit.

Overall, it just looks unattractive. It's a fat ugly blob that has neither coolness nor cuteness to it.
