It's not a meme. Hydreigon has a 600 BST, 1.25m EXP total, is a three stage line near the end of the PokeDex, just like the others.

Funnily enough, Volcarona is right after it. If Larvesta got another evolution which then evolved into Volcarona, they could've easily made it a pseudo as well (and Volcarona would also have even higher stats to match).

But it's not like Hydreigon is bad. In fact it was pretty awesome in Gen V. It's just that the Fairy type kind of says "fuck you" to it.

They probably only think dragons (or some kind of lizard or reptile) are the ones capable of being so powerful. Even Tyranitar, while not a dragon, is still reptilian. Metagross is the only one that truly stands out since it's not only not draconic in any way but it's also inorganic.

More of that, or experiment with different types. A Fairy type pseudo (one that could probably be a lot of the others) would have been great. Or, I think people would've been fine with Goodra if it just got a Poison secondary type since it already learns a lot of Poison type moves anyway and it'd be able to combat the newly introduced Fairy type.

Hydregion was amazing in BW, even in Ubers. Great typing, insane movepool, excellent stat spread, levitate etc... He just happened to get fucked super hard by Fairy since he's 4x weak to it and fairies resist/immune both his STABs.

That's my point. Game Freak isn't going to abandon the 2 types max mechanic, so they ultimately have to choose which type(s) to axe when making the Pokemon's stats.
