I did kinda enjoy the trails, just wish they did more of them.... but they scrapped it for a plotline and it kinda consumed the rest of the game. They worked against each other, not together.

Not having HMs is awesome. Not being able to face trainers level curling up to the gym leader and not being able to solve quirky fun puzzles isn't the god damn same.

Yeah, gym puzzles were a lot better than trials which for the most part were "Run to this area and press A/fight wild pokemon" but with some shitty story justification.

I feel like the concept behind the ghost and grass trials could've been done much better. I like the idea of a scavenger hunt, but it was way too straightforward here.

The fire trial was neat but I dont think that remotely counts as a puzzle.

It just would have been nice if we had more options for battling Trial captains, completely akin to post-game Gym Leader rematches in HGSS and what not. Seriously why in the fuck can't I battle Ilima where he uses Tauros and Miltank, despite those two Pokemon being absolutely perfect for him?

The only one that really disappointed me was Lena, whose team is kind of pathetic even if you do happen to find her at the earliest possible time. I guess that's balanced out by Kiawe being the strongest captain/gym leader yet, with his A-Marowak and Mega Kanga.

Okay, anon.

After playing SM, I went back to replay Platinum.

I had always taken gyms for granted, but, holy shit, they're a slog compared to trials. It's not like gym puzzles are particularly fun or interesting--the solution is usually pretty obvious, and it just takes busywork to actually complete it. And your reward for that is...being underleveled when you face the gym leader. So you sometimes end up having to go through each step twice, once to fight the trainer and then a second time to advance.

Each trial at least had a bit of a narrative to it, which made them more immersive. Gyms, meanwhile, always felt like you had temporarily wandered into a game from a different genre for no adequately explained reason. Gyms also failed to really provide any sense of rising tension, since you could always backtrack to the Pokémon Center and then come back to where you were. Hell, you could walk up to the gym leader and then decide to jog back in order to heal up. Trials locked you in, and every step was a step forward.

I can't think of a single thing I miss about gyms.

Gyms would be far better if you weren't allowed to leave in between, and the gym reset each time you entered.

It would make leveling a lot easier though as you just could repeat the gym-noobs.

It's not like trials are that far off from gyms anyway in concept. They really aren't. It's just their leadup is pathetic in nearly every case. I do like the idea of taking the building off of the gym concept, but you have to give it something other than "find these five seashells"
