Lets mix up the trial and gym format.

Trials now contain trainers, and all contain areas twice as long as the longest trail from SM, which have some kind of puzzle/task that must be solved/overcome.

You can now ask pokemon to join you no battling required.

Solving puzzles allows you to bypass trainers.

After you complete the trial/gym, going back and speaking to any trainer you didn't battle will reward a useful item like a Rare Candy, or a TM you'd otherwise have to buy with BP.

The whole team rocket thing in Gen 1, where you just got an item that supplemented legendary pokemon acquisition is actually my favourite evil doer plotline.
