Difference is, you can have Castform and another Pokemon in alternate form in a team at the same time, and don't have to restrict their item slot.
Mega Evolution isn't just a new form. You can only have one of it in your team at any give time. On top of that, it isn't even something the Pokemon can achieve by itself. It NEEDS a Mega Stone. It is a lot different from alternate forms.
