Gen 5 may have been linear as fuck but it gave us great Pokémon in volcarona, krookodile, serperior, galvantula, elektross, chandulure, accelgor, golurk, hydreigon, and many more. That's generally what happens when you create so many Pokemon. Similar thing happened in Kanto. It had many more designs that were bad compared to, say, Johto. The ratio, however, is more or less equal. Kanto and Unova had just about the same number of bad designs. Though I personally prefer Unova's designs overall, they had a very similar number of good designs.

It's called a design choice. The red and blue guys in karate at least were useable in battle. Yes there was trash and ice cream and Le chandelier Pokémon, but it comes to use. At least I can use these Pokémon to win battles unlike gen 1-2 abomanations like sludge with blank eyes, a dragonfly, a half hatched egg, pokeball, rock with arms, anal beads, and we all don't forget that bird that's just covered in fire that's a "legendary". Gen 5 isn't perfect but damn you cherry pick at the highest level. That dragon that's ""useless"" was a beast until fairy came and Shit on any use past gen 6.
