The point was that Bruno's Pokemon were worse off for having 4 moves. For example if Hitmonlee had just Hi-Jump Kick and Mega Kick it would be more effective.

Limited movesets aren't even an excuse, considering his Machamp has a TM move. If those Onix had Rock Slide and Explosion and nothing else they would be a hell lot more challenging even if they had 50% chance of picking Explosion every turn.

Dont forget the first games didnt have exp share or free spammable TMs for your whole team, or EZ mandatory legendaries before the E4. Status effects were also much more bullshit and the game would hax the fuck out of you constantly.

Even taking all that into account he was still easy. In Gen 1 in terms of the story the HMs like Strength and Fly were legitimately good moves and Surf was competitive.

Teaching something like Nidoking Strength, Surf and Submission(which you could buy) would give you a massive advantage. Even if you're underlevelled half of Blue's team are using moves that are around half as strong as yours.
