Z-Moves are effectively a balanced version of them with slightly less damage and restricted to one use. Gen 5 got pretty silly when just about everyone was running elemental gems.

Z stones are ubiquitous gems with added utility, they just don't consume after use.

Acrobatics or unburden aren't really the issue here, we went full cycle just with an added eq or ground gem physical Earth power added to Garchomp.

Z stones offer a lot more consistency.

Z stock pile, power herb+boost on fly/solarbeam on some Pokémon, the ability to go single or multi target on doubles with tectonic rage eq, ability to hit chip damage through protect and other status or sure strike z status moves such as z hypnosis getting a speed boost or a pseudo ancient power on celebrate users as well as self healing belly drum to ensure it activates are all better than just fucking unburden.

Listen man, unburden is an OK ability at best, z moves actually offer a lot more than gems, unburden still works with consumable items and Sitrus hawlucha is still good just like slurpuff.

Because it doesn't "use up" the item. Comsumable items actually disappear after using them, which is why using them in story mode is a waste. Z-Crystals are like mega stones in the way that they can only be used once per battle, but don't get consumed so you can actually use them in story mode
