Yea, each symbol corresponds to one of the six stats, it's how you manage all of your breeding stock etc. In gen 7 you have the option to mark it as red now too, presumably to indicate 0 ivs

They first appeared in RSE, but there were only 4 symbols.
They were most likely just generic marking aides, just something to make it easier to look for specific pokemon you wanted to group in a certain way.

Once they saw how specific and autistic people into breeding got, they just made it more efficient for those purposes

Don't have a pic on me, but my blaziken from ruby. He's 12 years old at this point and has a shit ton of ribbons. I think 40 or so. He's just called blaziken since I didn't nickname my pokemon when I started.
