The Physical/Special split was how things always should have worked if you were applying any common sense to the description of pokemon moves.

Gengar being a phenomenal special attacker but both of its stabs being purely physical is moronic.

The only thing I miss from the pre-split days is running Hyper Beam on things like Gyarados or Snorlax in game. I know it was far from optimal, but it just felt RIGHT after having it seem so cool in the movies and the like. Giga Impact just isn't the same, I want my big monsters to breath death beams.

Not that guy but I assume he means that for a pokemon to be considered viable for battling it's generally assumed to have perfect IVs in everything or everything but a stat it does not in any way want anyways. The only reason something doesn't have solid 31s is for Hidden Powers.

In single-player, the varied IVs help every pokemon you encounter be a little different from the others, making for a less predictable experience. In competetive battling, however, all lower IVs do is establish not all pokemon are created equal and add an element to breeding that is a lot more time-consuming and a lot less intuitive than getting a pokemon with the right natures and egg moves.
