If it were up to me I would make a new ability just for the Regis called Ancient Armor, it would be a combination of Battle Armor and Filter. Immune to critical hits and 25% less damage from super effective hits.

Oh, and give them Recover also.

Spend a generation redoing everything, making a large, interesting region. Have a good, engaging story. Fix everything, then in the next gen add new pokemon, moves, etc.

I don't think that there are too many pokemon, it's just that there's too many to fit well into a single region. Kalos tried that and it became a clusterfuck. I think that GF needs to focus on improving the games before adding more pokemon.

I'd also love to see a more exploration based region. One with lots of little things just off the trail, or whole areas that are fairly obscure.
I feel that Sinnoh did this well, I didn't even know about Fuego Ironworks until my second playthrough. Solaceon Town and the route below it are probably my favourite areas in any Pokemon game, the hallowed tower, the area with the giga drain TM and the tunnel through the ruins are fun things to discover. Mt.Coronet was very fun to explore too. The Scorched Slab and dive spots in Hoenn and the hidden grottos in Unova are also great.
