Feelings don't win fights. Even the affection stat (which didn't exist at the time Karen said that line) is ultimately just a number you raise by performing certain actions in the game repeatedly, it's not substantially different from grinding.
The game cannot detect whether you, the player in real life, think of the pokémon as a true friend or just a bunch of data. You could HATE your pokémon from the bottom of your heart, and as long as the data says it's strong, that's how it will be in battle.

It's like being that guy who actually tries to get good IVs/natures and EV trains all his pokemon before the postgame. well what i do every gen is i look at a pokemon's stats and if i see that theyre good i put them in my team and try to fit them in with other pokemon i find via the same method.

it always works pretty well, and i grow attached to them more and more as the game's lifespan progresses because i both like their design and their stats.

so its possible to use pokemon you like AND have success competitively.

She's saying you shouldn't care about those things and should try to win with your favs. That's cool, it's a respectable way. But it's moralfaggotry. Feel good. Spooky shit. It's not "selfish" to value strength (there are definitely people, even in the world of Pokemon, who like certain Pokemon because of their actual or perceived strength) or take it into consideration, especially if your goal is to actually win. And not some moral/personal victory but actual victory.

The spirit behind the quote is indeed admirable, but it's narrow. The other quotes in here are more helpful and considerate. Then again, it was never supposed to be analyzed like this. She was communicating the theme of the game that love for Pokemon should transcend consideration of strong/weak. The selfishness she speaks of is Team Rocket only caring about strength/usefulness and the mindset Silver developed out of to become a more loving and better trainer. Look, you can claim that, for instance, levels don't exist in "the pokémon universe", but they obviously do, because they have an observed repeatable effect.
