Honestly, it's not the smile that gets me, it's just how rigid your character is all the time. They're a robot with 2 facial expressions: contentedly happy and mildly surprised. You don't blink, you don't change who/what you're looking at, you don't change your stances or expressions (for the most part), you just walk up, stand there while people spout words at you, then walk away to go do... whatever it is you're going to do or get into a battle. Every time. I don't mind that the character's supposed to be a "blank slate", but you could literally replace the MC with a cardboard cutout of him/herself and nothing would change.

Give the character a little life, GameFreak. If not through story than through the little touches.
