This game was a step up in art direction and ambient design though. The games are not tile based anymore which was a needed change. I agree it feels a little bit limited but in the the next games things are gonna improve I bet.

I was also thinking the game was kinda shitty. Until, during the last part of the game, I smoked some weed. The story became one of the best for me and the pokemon on my party (all new) became accepted (I was basically a genwunner). I went through such an emotional moment then, I cried. I felt something I didn't feel since r/b/y or even g/s/c. It's how you experience shit. If you are too old to feel the ''child's joy'' you used to, smoke/drink some.

Kanto really doesn't allow you 'freedom', it's just a manner of challenging the gyms when you want, which is pointless because the game has a set level progression for the leaders. I love how people paint Kanto as if it were some open world region with zero restrictions. Johto is even more fucked since the levelling progression is terrible meaning half the time you're fighting gym leaders with level 32 and kanto's leaders are jokes, along with it being shelled out and boring.

More content does not mean better postgame. The best postgame is something like Platinum - you have that island to explore, not too big, but big enough, and you have the Frontier, gimped as it is. It doesn't overstay it's welcome, it's fun to explore, and it adds on a good couple hours after you beat the main game.
