Baile is the one that looks closest to the original. It's arguably the most well known and advertised species.
Pompom borrows from a few of the yellow species. One being immune to paralyzing poison of the tree that Sophocles is named after. The others for bill shape and color.
A bit of a stretch, but Pau is plucked to reference how Hawaiians took a few feathers from the birds for high class ornaments and then released them.
Sensu is just to reference how Japanese moved to Hawaii and bird dances I guess.

Posted a few times, but Alolan dugtrio's hair is based on volcanic glass called Pele's hair. It's named after the volcano goddess, and the part about taking it leading to curses, as mentioned in the dex, is part of the lore for Pele. Plus, the park rangers get pissed when people steal shit from the park.

The yungoose and alolan ratata line references how the rats and mongooses affected Hawaii after their introduction. Rats came with the Polynesians as they settled, and they ended up killing a few plant and animal species before western contact. The Norway and Black rat came later and supplanted the original Polynesian species. They also ruined cash crops, so the government brought in mongooses to kill them. Turns out that mongooses, a diurnal predator, won't really prey on rats, because they're nocturnal. The mongooses just went after the native ground nesting birds and seabirds instead. Now there is a day and night shift eating shit.

Bruxish is based on the state fish of Hawaii or one of its congeners, the reef triggerfish, or the humhumunukunukuapua'a in Hawaiian. This is also not the longest name for a fish in the Hawaiian language.
The bits about its teeth are due to bruxism, also known as teeth grinding. Also because triggerfish have scary teeth in order to eat sea urchins and bite like motherfuckers. They are territorial and will attack anything that goes near their nests, hence the website description.
The lure on its head is a reference to the trigger which triggerfish are named after. It's normally used to lock the fish into a crevice while it rests at night.
