It's probably parents spending money on pokemon merchandise for their kids, if anything. I'm in my early twenties, I have disposable income, and the only thing I buy is one pokemon game per year like you said. That and the $5 annual subscription to the bank. GameFreak and The Pokemon Company aren't exactly turning a huge profit off of all the people like me.

No, they're actually around 14-16. The "older" protags are in Gens 5 and 6 (barring ORAS). Everyone else is 11-12.

I wish they'd at least give the option between "kid" and "teen" appearances. I know they'll probably never have an adult option but I'd rather play as a ~17 year old than an 11 year old

This. This was one of the things XY did well when tied with customization. You could have your character look older or younger depending on your oufit and appearance.
