I've read a few volumes of it, it's pretty good. It made me feel weirdly nostalgic for some reason. Maybe because I had a few of those little transparent pokeballs with little pokemon figures inside when I was a kid.

I didn't care for it, personally. I dropped it midway through the RS arc. There are a lot of contrivances, everybody seems to instantly understand everybody else's motives and plans with the slightest hints and huge jumps in logic, and all the protagonists having some sort of power is neat in theory, until it starts getting hamfisted.

Crystal's thing is that she's good at kicking Pokeballs at targets. She's the Capture expert, and is shown repeatedly catching huge amounts of Pokemon. That makes sense. Gold's thing is that he plays pool and was raised with Pokemon, while being an unlikable shounen jerk. He is shown, throughout his arc, hatching a Togepi egg over time. That's his only interaction with an egg for the majority of the series. The climax of the GSC arc is him hatching a freshly hatched egg by touching it, and the resultant newborn Pichu immediately defeats the villain with a very strong electric attack. Gold's title is that of Hatcher/Breeder. That seemed really dumb, and put a bad taste in my mouth. That being said, having Ruby be a Co-ordinator made for an interesting hook to the RS arc.

It was explained that most of Gold's hatcher ability was attained mostly from being raised in a house full of Pokemon all his life, and considers them more as family rather than pets you can care for/train/collect. And with that background, he was able to be a great motivator and influencer towards his team. This has been hammered through out the arc, whether it was during that one time he hatched Togepi and he inherited Gold's gambling personality, to Gold's responses to how he thought of Pokemon in contrast to his rivals/foils Silver and the Masked Man, who thought of Pokemon as just tools. His shounen jerk attitude kindof further emphasized how much of an influence this guy is (even if he is an ass at times), because hell, if there was someone who wanted to get a point across, it would pretty much be this guy.

I will admit that the way they handled showing off his ability could've been handled a LOT better, but I saw what they were going for and it made sense in the grand scheme of things.

Also remember that Pichu's egg was already being taken care of beforehand by the daycare couple (who Gold had to assist for a few days), so it's not exactly a fresh new egg. Combine that with Gold's pichu basically being the son of Red's Pika and Yellow's Chuchu (who have surpassed the average pikachu by this point), and it's no wonder that this particular pichu wrecked shit in the finale. Call it a deus ex in a way, but it didn't come out of nowhere.

It really depends on the person. I've seen varying opinions ranging from rage-inducing, downright boredom, to hype incarnate, no matter the arc.

Also note, everything in this series takes place in the same world, so even if one arc is stand-alone, you can bet those characters and events will be referenced or even make cameos/major appearances in later arcs down the line. This doesn't guarantee spoilers, but it helps when you encounter people you don't reconize from previous arcs that suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Anyway, if you want a brief overview:

3 volumes, Kanto. Takes place 5 years after RGB, Yellow, and GSC. Characters from RGB and GSC make appearances and is a continuation to those arcs. Main story revolves around the Sevii Islands and Team Rocket.
>Emerald:
4 volumes, Hoenn. Is a direct sequel to FRLG and RS. Every previous arc is relevant during this story, and a majority of the main characters make an appearance. Emerald is generally considered one of the worst mains, but the finale is worth it for most.

It's pretty hard to obtain archived copies of everything up until now, and dubious quality still plagues a good chunk of it. There's a lot of back and forth over the various versions of the early volumes, back from when Viz first fucked it up and from not so great fan translations either replacing only some chapters or mixed in together of varying quality. BW has plagued for years by it's byzantine release order and I'm still not sure if the main hosting site for it has everything. I think it might all be up unwatermarked on Kissmanga, but I haven't gone through it all myself yet. I wouldn't both worrying about a story time until we get a proper collected archive, and certainly not one relying on only what's easily available right now.

There's no real point in doing something like that unless we can get something actually decent overall set up. I mean for fuck's sake, there's STILL two pages left almost completely untranslated from the end of HGSS that apparently no one has ever touched.

I like how Ruby &Sapphire get mega Gardevoir&mega Gallade though, even at the expense of Wally. It is a nice callback how they used to reverse typical male/female role.
The "second Courtney/Matt/Shelly/Tabitha" is the dumbest shit ever though. Old Courtney not appear while 2 OC admins nobody care about get a big role instead is epic fail.

Honestly though, Courtney coming back would (rightly) steal some focus off of the other characters since she had a sizable role in the original arc, especially with the drama between Ruby and Sapphire going on I could see her inflating the page numbers or making things even more rushed. Would have been nice to see a cameo, like her watching Ruby's contest or being a fellow contest competitor, but what can you do?

Just binged through XY, waiting for the remaining chapters but I like it a lot.

It really fleshes out the characters of the Kalos region and makes them feel alive. I think its the closest to RBY to playing the game story straight.
