Fire Red and Leaf Green are most likely no longer considered canon in the current timeline, with Gen 6 saying that the games that were released before are in a timeline where Mega Evolution doesn't exist, so a remake in the current timeline is possible.
I could see us getting a sequel instead though, as we saw older Red and Blue, and Lillie left for Kanto, which would put her trip ahead of when Red, Green and Blue take place.

This. For all we know, Only Kalos, Hoenn, and Alola are considered canon. I wouldn't be surprised if Gamefreak pulled this off as an excuse to make more games for Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova.
