Don't listen to these anons, they're trying to screw you over, OP. The pokerus will permanently faint the pokemon with it, essentially disabling its use for you. It will spread to adjacent pokemon in either the box or your party depending on if it's stored or not. You have to release it (or trade it if you're feeling naughty ;)) immediately before it fucks your whole collection up.

EVs increase the stats of your Pokemon. You get them automatically by fighting other Pokemon.

Each EV increases one stat. Each Pokemon you beat gives you 1-3 EVs, sometimes all for one stat, sometimes split between multiple stats. How many EVs you get and what stats they increase all depends on the species.
