i personally just finished pokemon sun with my little buddies here. was six years old when i played yellow and silver and eight when i played sapphire. legends are pokemon too and i care for appearance and usage over typing, which explains why i have had so many overlapping types. i'll rate others as they come in.

Cause holy fuck- I am not going to remember what I beat Red with for the first time, twenty fucking years ago... I've replayed each generation multiple times, it all kinda blurs together...
I do remember that my very first E4 clear, all those years ago, included a Blastoise and was on Red version...

Personally- If you're going for 'canon team' then I'd say only one starter per generation, no? All of them required trading except Yellow.
And there are some things I would change, personally, as well. Not including Nebby in SM is a fucking travesty, imo. And I'd personally swap the Lapras in RBY for a fossil-mon from Mt Moon, but those are definitely personal opinions.
I'm kinda inspired to look into this concept a bit more deeply, personally.. I mean: pick a canon team for each game, using one starter, version exclusives, and then the gifts + plotmons.. could be neat.

No, FRLG is the last version of that game and you can't have three starters but Red still has them in HGSS, BW2 and SM

Use fossils or Nebby means you must choose between fossils or versions (same about use Xerneas or Yveltal in Kalos), "the canon team" should be the same whatever fossil or game you like more, so no Xerneas, Yveltal, Solgaleo-Nebby or Lunala-Nebby.

Gen 5 case is perfect because choose a legendary doesn't leave in the background the opposite one. In Black and Black 2 case, Hilbert have Reshiram and Nate Zekrom, in White and White 2 case, Hilbert have Zekrom and Nate have Reshiram.
Since White and White 2 are proved the canon versions we have an answer about what mascot the protagonist have (unlike what happens with XY or SM)
