Yes, but I'd say it's necessary.
The protagonist is silent and a player insert, and while that works for games light on plot (Like most of the other Pokémon games), if you want a plot any deeper than than a puddle then it's basically required that you either have a non-player insert, non-silent protagonist or have other characters drive the plot instead. Sure, there are probably games that have managed it anyway, but GameFreak aren't skilled enough to pull that kind of thing off.

Rockstar realised early that this doesn't work well, so we got Tommy and CJ instead.
GameFreak on the other hand stubbornly holds on it as if their life depended on it.

Lillie was supposed to be the main heroine character like Yuna from Final Fantasy, which is basically a co-protagonist. The only reason she "took over" was because they forgot to give MC relevance. The main issue was basically that the entire third act was about saving Lusamine and Nebby so it was 100% about Lillie; ideally, they would have kept Lusamine a threat and make the third act about saving Alola/the world so that MC has a reason to tag along with her beyond "because Lillie is cute, I guess".

Worst character in the series. Mainly because she won't shutup and GF can't even into character growth stories. Even when they are simple and safe as all fuck.

Loved how instead of showing her growth throughout the game they just put her on a bus and imply that its going to happen later offscreen, which makes me wonder why the fuck did she railroad me the whole game just for no pay off.

shoutouts to rotomdex for only existing to railroad you from cutscene to cutscene. really like how useless he became once there were no more cutscenes. why'd they get rid of pss for this shit?

Not really, the majority of the game are unrelated Team Skull stuff and trials,really the last 1/4 max is actually Lillie related.

SMT will probably feel more familiar to you because most entries revolve around recruiting and fusing demons. There's a lot of good places to start, I'd personally recommend Digital Devil Saga or Devil Survivor.

I think they could do it. In this game you were given more "dialogue" choices than other games. Maybe Gamefreak could pull off a story with a bunch of different dialogue based on what you say and have it carry on until the end of the game.

Because it's a game for children about catching and battling pokemon. Your character needs to be empty for the kids to project onto and to appeal to the widest demographic possible.
