What if I told you that I know three languages, am currently working towards a degree, play the piano and have lots of friends as well as playing Pokémon.

I'm telling you, learning the type chart and whether or not Pokémon are shit is not comparable in any way to a new language or doing well in a subject.
>>
>>30568504
It's not like it's the only thing we do. It takes about one playthrough to learn all the new Pokemon and roughly type effectiveness, resistances, new abilities and strategies. So, like, 100 hours at most per gen, and then it's two years until the next game which introduces nothing new. What the hell do you think we do in between gens? I have two degrees and a good job, I just play Pokemon in my spare time when a new one comes out.
>>
>>30568504
>>you've spent years memorizing the movesets, typing, stats

Except I really didn't. I just learn about the current meta pokémon and how to deal with them. Not the whole 800 thing.
Also SM taught me I actually don't even know the type chart, I always thought Psychic resisted Poison since I literally never tried using it against it.

Also your logic is quite silly, people need free time to spend, you don't have to work 24/7. I have no friends though.

OP, time is time and besides humans are more directed to pleasure versus actual work. Think about it even if you don't play a video game, usually you doing something easy for pleasure such as drugs, alcohol, art all none productive things but things we nonetheless enjoy.

Yes we should be doing more productive things, but in the end can you think of a single person who is completely devoted to some productive activity?

OP, as some others here have said, you could have easily done many other things in addition to playing a lot of Pokemon. You don't have to sacrifice everything else in your pathetic life to be good at one hobby.

Now that you have moped about it, why don't you think of something that you do want to do and start moving towards it. Wanna learn an instrument/language? Then start taking lessons and soak up information online. Or just continue to be a lazy shit and do nothing but play Pokemon, then continue to blame it for all your problems.

The Earth has a population of 7 billion living people.

A rough estimate is that 108 billion people have ever lived.

To be quite honest, what 99% of the world does with their lives doesn't matter. The world functions with most of them struggling to survive on subsistence farming, hunting and gathering.

In other words, you are a small fraction of people(living) within a smaller fraction of that(first world) within an even smaller fraction of idiots who feel guilty that they don't live up to the handful of humans we can be bothered to remember in our culture and history. The millennial guilt that we may be *gasp* average is crazy. In truth your insignificance in the scale of the Earth is mind boggling to consider and it's a shame so many of us were told we'd be the truly special less than 1%. By definition, not even 1 out of 100 of us could be.

Buuuut

You can enjoy your life on your own terms and shed this stupid guild you have. There's nothing wrong with being a happy prole. If you want more, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. Get cracking and just view Pokemon as what is is: an enjoyable hobby. If it becomes all consuming, dial it back a bit. Everybody needs relaxation time.

If you want to learn a language, play an instrument or go back to school, go for it. But go for it and embrace it, don't take it as penance for enjoying yourself earlier.

I've got no regrets. Pokemon inspired me to learn/improve on various hobbies such as drawing, writing, etc. Sure I've got what amounts to useless knowledge up in my head, but then again it's no different than knowing about the stats and records for baseball teams, the details about the actors, director, etc in a film, and other things that could amount to equally useless.

I'll keep up with my hobbies, learn new things and improve over the years, and call it good. I've got a great job, a fulfilling life so far, and a wonderful gf and involved social life. You won't ever see me complain about what I know involving Pokemon.

>you could have devoted all that brainpower...

The thing is it really takes no effort to know all Pokemon names. You don't need to learn them you just automatically memorize them. Someone should figure out why it's so easy to remember all this stuff about completely fictional non existent creatures and figure out how to transfer it into learning other things. Imagine what a genius you'd be if you'd remember things as easily as Pokemon stuff
>>
>>30568615
This (bar the piano thing in my case).
Pokemon is formulaic and repetitive enough that you don't really devote as much brain storage/power to it as you think you do.

Then again I haven't yet met anyone that remembers the name of every single berry/item, so maybe I'm just scratching the surface.

Bright, distinct, evocative designs with names that are etymologically straightforward (usually) and connected to the related designs. There are a little over a dozen options for a major characteristic of these things, which is conveyed in the design by color, aesthetic, or both. This creates multiple simple and memorable layers that connect to form the mental anchor, which gives us the stats - 6 variables that are easily remembered as either "low", "medium", "high", or "very high". Considering that a large number of Pokemon are part of evolutionary chains, there are much fewer things actually remembered, as few people bother to remember stats on most NFEs, with a few exceptions in comp play, like Chansey and Porygon2.
>>
Learning a new language, and learning to be social use different areas of the brain than the type of memory you use to memorize all the Pokemon. Sure your time spent in Pokemon could have been spent somewhere else, but just because you know 800 Pokemon doesn't mean you can't know an additional language.

Your gray matter is really adept at learning a gigantic amount of facts no matter what your age. For instance, without you realizing it, you know over a thousand logos of businesses. New York taxi cab drivers, before the advent of GPS, memorized the locations of hundreds of streets and intersections.

You didn't want to then and you still don't want to now, so all of that is meaningless.
You did the thing that you enjoyed and you keep doing it, so what else matters?
Would you be happier if you did the things you don't want to do in order to be someone with the type of life you don't want to have?
What you have now is what you want, if you wanted anything else as much as this you would have it.

That's exactly it. /aco/ and Tumblr are great.

I don't really understand 4chan's inherent phobia of tumblr, you aren't going to find that "terrible SJW cesspool" unless you deliberately look for it. If you use it as a place to post and share art (read: porn) it's a godsend because it's so easy to have tons of new people see your stuff, it's much faster than twitter.
I'm pretty new to the porn drawing rodeo, but I think I have what it takes to get mildly popular. It's exciting, I'm experiencing the furry equivalent to manifest destiny.

It doesn't take nearly as much mental effort to memorize those things as you are implying.
Half the Pokemon typings are obvious from just looking at them, the other half is easily remembered by association.

But I haven't been able to memorize learnsets, that takes some actual brainpower due to the sheer complexity of it, including previous gen tutors and HM legality. Best I can do is memorize the most common sets and good moves common Pokemon carry in competitive formats, but this is limited to like 50 or so Pokemon.

Where's your master degree in cientific rocket science?
Look, you learn a lot of stuff in your life that can be meaningless, the menu on a restaurant that you like, options and shortcuts in office, even meme's types and characteristics.
But if you didn't take the time to know those thing, does it means that you'll have already learn diferent languages and all of Einstein's work? No, it's just stuff that you learn or remember because you like it, you aren't going to run out of memory in your brain.

I could have, but I wouldn't have so I have no regrets

as long as something like Pokemon existed and I would still be a friendless loser in school, I would have used it as a way to escape my shitty school life and throw myself into learning Pokemon rather than doing well in school

not that it got any better when I stopped playing pokemon for a while, I just played other video games.

This game is actually a low end skill. Learning a language is much harder unless you learn them as a kid.

>being social

Wait, where am I?

I was expecting most of the replies to be about Anabel. Kinda disappointed.

Given that in the grand scheme of the universe EVERYTHING we do is equally pointless, I feel indifferent about it. I achieved enough to live a financially more than stable life. Any time beyond that I devote to stuff I percieve as fun.
