Also, E4 has always used thematically fitting mons as well as mons based on typing.

I also wish more higher-up trainers diverged from their type. It makes it more interesting and potentially challenging, and gives you a sense of the character's personality better. Or better yet, more trainers who have a theme that isn't a type.

Well its a problem they made for themselves, as Gen. 4 had plenty of new Fire-types available; for whatever reason GF decided to put them all in the national dex.

you fucking dinguses the reason that E4 members are type specialists (albeit to a looser standard than gym leaders, like Bruno, Agatha, and Flint) is so that the Champion's mixed team can stand out more. The E4 are type specialists, but even moreso than gym leaders, which is why they're so elite. They have more counters to common weaknesses, or just have better pokemon.
If the E4 all had mixed-type teams, then there wouldn't really be an Elite Four and a Champion. It'd just feel like five champions.

Themes other than types would be cool in theory but in practice it ruins what makes the champion unique. The fight with the champ needs to mean more than "they're the strongest trainer." Their team needs to be the most well-built in the region. That's why the only other NPCs, with rare exceptions, to have mixed type teams are rival characters and evil bosses.

Pokemon is default easy mode, making special snow flake teams wont change that, because the game mentality is for these games to be for babies. I "got" the dumb hot air baloon and hot pokemon "theme" even then but it's not smart at all, it only makes it look like the game was badly fucking planned for lacking fire types.
