When a Pokemon in gen 7 drops below half health they can summon another Pokemon, usually of the same species. As you repeat this by KOing one and letting the other summon another at the end of each turn, the chance of encountering a shiny grows. Also they will have better IVs and give more EVs.

Don't feel bad, I just caught a shiny Merciless Mareanie. I was really hoping I wouldn't be disappointed when I saw it's ability, but I wasn't too happy about it. Still neat to see, though, I guess.
