gen 1 had the best. they felt more like realistic creatures that could actually exist and they're simple in the nice kind of way instead of the lazy over cartoonified kind of way.

I'm actually not surprised by that, since gen 5 has the most extreme distribution in terms of design quality. There were tons of elder god tier like Volcarona, but also trash like the copypaste monkeys. So people that like gen 5 tend to remember all those shit designs, while those that liked it remember the good ones.

Also, if you think newer Pokemon designs endlessly rehash Gen 1 concepts, that's all Gen 3's fault. The idea of a regional bird and a regional butterfly/moth and a regional Ratatta clone and a regional Pikachu clone started with Hoenn.

Honestly a hard choice. All the gens have really damn good designs, but i choose gen5 just because it has so many cool bugs like volcarona.

Interestingly, gen 3 is the lowest in the "worst" poll and the second lowest in the "best" poll. This suggests that it's designs were average all around. Not much bad stuff, but nothing that truly stands out either. Compare that to gen 4, which is tied for first in "worst" and second in "best".

I'd give that to Gen IV as its starter designs evoke a sense of power and dominion over their elements, as much as I don't fancy most of the rest of its Dex. Blaziken looks a bit too distant from its real-world animal origins. It's not necessarily a bad thing to go for a more original approach than slapping an element onto a color-coded animal and calling it a day, but there's just something off about it that rubs me the wrong way in comparison to Infernape, as much as that one could go without the fiery scalp. Sceptile looks wonky with that tail and those pods on its upper back, making Grovyle have a more aesthetic appeal than it. Swampert looks more coherent in its design than Empoleon, though.

While I think Gardevoir's a fine design and don't like the addition of Gallade as some sort of half-baked means to retcon male Gardevoir out, having a "god tier design" acknowledged as a harbinger of degeneracy is a no-go.

Gen 3 is tied for first in best and last in worst, guess people really like the gen 3 designs.

This is bait.

But, I think the problem is that people my age(20/30s) always thought gen were animals. They were always supposed to be monsters. The problem was that due to the small file sizes of the original game boy and the small screens, creatures had to be simple and clean.

This is why as the tech increased so did the designs become more elaborate and less simple. Sure there are a few over designed Pokemon, but as a whole they are monsters based on animals, not animals with magical powers.

I just can't wrap my head around the whole judging by gen thing. I judge Pokemon I like on a case-by-case basis, and I look at the Pokedex as a whole without splitting them up into groups. Also, I think that fans who dislike creative designs tend to either not be very artistically inclined or boring in general, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Simplicity just appeals to some more than others.
