My biggest advice; go in with an open mind for the story. I have a friend who went in not giving a shit about the story, he just spammed A through the "cut scenes". He is just almost at the Elite 4 and has lost interest. Meanwhile I have took my time and actually read the story for the most part.

It is probably one of the better stories of Pokemon.

Also it can be actually challenging at times. I wiped 3 times against the Grass trial, and almost lost to a few others.

I am not a big fan of a good chunk of the new pokemon, but the game itself is great

The pacing is slow at the beginning like most pokemon games, even more so than this one.

After you get through the start it becomes a lot of fun, I like it a lot more than the older games. Getting rid of the HM mechanic was a huge plus for me. The story was good for once, the characters all likeable. Very fun light hearted game.

Cancer beasts are the worst of these offenders because we've seen alien and transdimensional pokemon before.
The plot is 10miles wide and 2" deep with team wigger being cringy and aether being run by a damaged woman.
All the QoL improvements from gen6 are gone and there is a grind to survive the over levelled enemies. GenV's exp system is back.

The mechanics they included to make certain Pokemon scarce are annoying as shit, but they had to take steps to offset wifi cheese so kids aren't strutting around with shiny 6IV l100 Mewtwos in the first town.

Here's the facts:

Truck through that. It really opens up near the end of island 2. Still a good bit of cutscenes, but they become more story and less just handholding. And way, way less of them.

>conversely, there's gobs of old favorites, and the selection is pretty solid
Judging by the rest of the thread, you'll probably want the older ones more. You'll find a team you like. Definitely give some of the Alola forms a try, though. Most of them are significantly better Pokemon in the battle sense, even if some of their designs suffered.

With one or two exceptions, they're all really great. I went in expecting not to like them and was extremely pleasantly surprised.
