No, the "new designs are in all ways as good as the original" is a meme.

Literally all the moves that the Pokemon Company did this year were aimed at the first generation and they caught on. Pokemon GO? Only the first generation, it drew back a ton of old fans and pulled huge amounts of new ones with great designs. Sun&Moon panders with Alolan forms - yeah, some are completely butchered, but some are pretty respectful of the old style.

Hell even Pokemon TCG released XY Evolutions, a set containing only the first 150 in the original frame and artstyle - that shit was one of the only sets to be bought out and price-rigged by shops, when usually they sell below MSRP.

Face it, fans of inflated "so cute XD" balloons - you're a minority that was heading into the cesspool with the Pokemon franchise as a whole.

Gen 1, the beginning of pokemon and some of the most iconic designs but a couple dumb ass designs (Mr. Mime and Jynx I'm looking at you)

Gen 2, about the same as gen 1, baby pokemon were a mistake, but dark types are all pretty dope and there really were no godawful designs

Gen 3, Probably the high point of pokemon designs, all 3 starters are dope, gardevoir porn starts being created, pokemon get abilities that actually differentiate pokemon of the same types from eachother

Gen 4, everything falls apart, starting with bidoof, then there's the new trade evolutions of magmar, electabuzz, magneton, and rhydon. Eventually it reaches a critical mass of shit culminating in Lucario x Gallade porn and even disgusting Ralts porn.

Gen 5, apparently a nuke went off and morphed all the good designs into shit and brought dozens of species of inanimate objects to life. Shit like Klinklang, Vanilluxe, and LITERALLY A BAG OF GARBAGE come to life as pokemon.

Gen 6. Nintendo realizes that they fucked up royally with the last gen, they need a new gimmick, and mega forms are introduced and look retarded without exception. If that wasn't enough they had the great idea to add the brand new faggot I mean fairy type of pokemon. However, talonflame IS dope as fuck.

Gen 7. We are in paradise, there are so many god tier pokemon designs this gen, and even legendaries don't all look terrible. We've got cute pokemon like stufful, we've got cool pokemon like Lycanroc, hell gamefreak even said "let's make a gay fish with lips" and the design turned out good. Not to mention we've got porn of Salazzle, and the human pokegirls are hot too. Basically pokemon is better than it's ever been.

I love gen 1 designs, and I stand by them being the best, of course I like Lycanroc, but come one you cant sit there and say something like Bewear is good. I prefer teddiursa for example

Does Staraptor come before or after bidoof? I think that's a good fall-off point. It's such an excellent showcase of what I dislike about most of DP's pokemon. It'd be a passable, decent looking bird if they didn't give it that stupid red tipped comb that comes out of nowhere and even looks like it was slapped onto the drawing last minute. It's like they just drew a pokemon like they would of for an earlier game and just slapped random features and highlights on it because they could.

Honestly I thought the comb was supposed to be a second beak for the longest time

Those look better and more original than half of Pokemon desu. They are based after actual Japanese myths that's why a lot of them look bizarre but if you actually look what they are based on their designs make perfect sense

I'm a pretty big fan of coyote design.

gen 1: Mostly good but some very dull stuff and weird duds like lickitung

gen 2: Very obviously the stuff they thought was too lame even next to the duds like lickitung mixed in with some cool new stuff like xatu and tyranitar. Inoffensive even at its worst

gen 3: mostly good but there's a disproportionate amount of duo pokemon that are very nearly the exact same thing twice clogging up the pokedex for some reason (plusle/minun, volbeat/illumise, latias/latios). More pointless than outright bad

gen 4: This is where pokemon design starts to get really bad. Many of the better pokemon this gen are just updates of older ones like dusknoir and gliscor laced with the rare standalone gem like rotom or toxicroak. Lots of really pointless legendaries, special shout out to phione

gen 5: Largely an improvement but there's still obvious cracks like the copypaste monkeys, vanillish and mlp.

gen 6: About as paint by numbers as pokemon can get. With very few exceptions the stuff that isn't incredibly dull is monstrously awful or an obvious gimmick and isn't helped by its tiny size. By the time you start getting to the good pokemon you're already at the end of the dex.

gen 7: Probably the best batch overall. The final stage starters and some regional forms are pretty repulsive and there's a few lickitung-esque duds in stuff like bewear but there's dozens of A++ monsters thrown into the mix so it balances out and rarely feels its lenght

Overall I'd say its fair to say pokemon have gotten worse over the years though. The worst gen 5 mons are a hell of a lot worse than the worst gen 2 mons for instance
