Games like Kid Icarus: Uprising and Smash Bros look far better than Sun/Moon, actually run at a fairly stable framerate and they have far, far more action going on the screen at once.

"Content" doesn't have anything to do with how the game looks or runs, that only affects how much capacity is required to store the software. Game Freak are just incompetent programmers who don't need to worry about competition (so they have no pressure to improve themselves).
