Gen 1 didn't really have any puzzles in caves or intersecting routes the only ones that do exist are in places like silph and the GC. They didn't come in properly until 2 and 3.
There weren't many areas to explore either.

In fact the only real difference is the cutscenes, everything else is as basic as Gen 1.

For someone that likes them both you sure didn't pick up on the similarities.

It can't play like gen1 for two reasons
You don't beat gym leaders
Gen1 wasn't driven by a story, it was a game just about your adventure. That's also why it's possible to skip over gyms in gen1

Honestly, im ok with this. It didn't meet my expectations for an anniversary title, but i was still pleasently surprised. These games have added much more to the formula than XY did. Z-moves are less destructive than megas and trials-totems is a welcomed breath of fresh air. Sure gen1 pandering is still ridiculous and the removal of triple and rotation battles makes my blood boil but overall is a step in the right direction. I hope this teaches gf to keep innovating the formula and building on the succes of SM.

PoGO helped, but it isn't THE reason for SM's good sales. If it was, then it wouldn't have affected only SM's sales.
