Yeah, they also coulda had some flavour text about how the evolution stones in Alola have slightly different energies resulting in the same non-Regional Pokemon (Pika and Eggs) becoming Regional Pokémon after the stone is used. This would of allowed them to retcon Leafeon to use Alolan Leaf Stone, Umbreon A-Moon Stone, Espeon A-Sun Stone.

Unless it depends of coding in a huge system, like contests, you should be thinking of new rock placements.

Trade + item needs to be retconned to level up + item. MAYBE keep Porygon because it actually fits.

GF hates retcons.

Its why they came up with things like the Moss rock for Leafeon in the first place, so they don't have a situation where people wonder why Leaf Stone didn't work in earlier games.
Though also GF is silly and refuses to change obvious shit like the Nidorina and Ninoqueen egg group issue

Actually the main reason for Leafeon and Glaceon's evolution method is that every Eeveelution a new feature introduced in that gen. Espeon and Umbreon highlighted day/night and happiness, Glaceon and Leafeon highlighted location-based evolutions, and Sylveon highlited Poke-Amie and the Fairy type. The next time we get an Eeveelution is whenever we get a new feature that could be a key in evolution.
