Early game marketing (and the E3 demo) had him with Popplio, and I think that was their initial intention, but I think the overly negative reception resulted in damage control because following trailers gave him the cat or owl.

I also played as Chicken but felt that the story was written with a male protagonist in mind. I cannot pinpoint why exactly but it's something about the way Hau and Gladion interact with you.
