They should. Gen 6 featured mega evolutions, gen 7 features UBs, and gen 8 will go its own direction.

I wonder how long they can keep it up. Z moves were an amazing idea compared to the power creep and limited number of pokemon that can use mega evolutions, but how many times can you introduce a new mechanic, I wonder.

They have dex numbers are are part of the dex and most likely the National one as well. They're not going anywhere, just like Megas. Also, UB's are classified as "sublegendary" so technically in this world they are Legendary and since GF loves pumping the Legendary count.

They don't even need plot devices like the UBs. Pokémon would do great as a more open-ended game with smaller, local stories that aren't told through an active narrative.
