Because that's what the AI does. There's a Gyarados fight in the late game who has access to both Ice Fang and Dragon Dance, guess which move it uses against a Tsareena using Trop Kick. You basically lock it into thinking "I need to increase my attack"

I really hope the trade off for this isnt shitty AI now because if one thing gen 6 got right was the highest AI setting was actually capable of being challenging if you setup the roster and movesets right.

I had the opposite experience. Her Clefable in both fights just used Cosmic Power or Metronomed some worthless moves. Meanwhile I set up three Nasty Plots on Salazzle and swept her entire team.

That is pretty clever is the devs thought that way. If you're going to steal any item, it would be from the mon that typically runs Guts. Altough it is possible that they forgot to change its ability.

the AI is pretty bad so having fewer moves means it won't fuck up so hard. look at the battle tower: it needs to hax 1/1000000 shit like quick claw sheer cold in order to be a "challenge"

It's a trick to make the AI behave better

We have those already, that's how the AI chooses which damaging move to use. The problem is the way it decides when to use status moves.
