Gen 2 and 3 have garbage difficulty. Platinum and BW/B2W2 are likely harder, but SM is a lot better with their difficulty curve than XYORAS.

That being said, trainers do tend to use 1-2 Pokémon barring the route miniboss trainer and some of the final trainers.

I remember in previous games trainers like fisherman would have a team of 6 magi Karla and shit.

Challenge doesn't come from the amount of Pokémon a trainer has. The majority of the time, if a trainer has Pokémon weak to yours, you can easily sweep their entire team regardless of how many Pokémon they have. What matters is the variety of Pokémon, their stats and move sets along with their held item.

Most importantly their AI. We're 7 gens in and very rarely do we ever see trainers switch out their Pokémon to counter an obvious weakness. Is it really that difficult to program the AI being able to switch out their Pokémon accordingly?

Except if you turn it off you suddenly get fucked from Poni Island to the league where trainer levels jump from 40 to 55 in two hours. You either keep it on and breeze through 90% of the game and then are the intended level for the last 10%, or you turn it off and are the intended level for the first 90% and then smash into a wall for the last 10%.
The real problem isn't the exp share, it's the game being poorly balanced and having a stupid level curve.

I immediately turned it off when I got it. The game was mildly difficult, just barely, since I didn't grind wild Pokemon. For a Pokemon game, that's impressive level of difficulty.

Then when I got near the end of the second island, for some reason the NPCs stopped going up in level between there and the third island, stuck at 33-35, so I just turned on the exp all and now I'm steamrolling everything.

I tried to stay 3 levels above the highest wild Pokemon and trainers early on, and usually ended up 2 levels higher than the trials and kahunas. Now I'm like 10 levels above everyone. They're still around 36 or so at the end of Po Town while I'm sitting at 45+.
