It still had plot and action, though. Early gym battles, Amour subplot, Gablias rampage, Froakie nearly dying. Things slowed down a bit after the first 7 episodes and then picked up pace again after year one, but we at least had a good sense of where things were heading.

The only thing so far we really have in that department for SM is TopKek and the Z-Ring, with some vague notion of future trials for Ash. That feels kind of thin.
