He's mechanically the same. You enter his area, fight a bunch of pokemon you can't catch, then at the end you get bugnium Z.

There's no trial, it's just a few trainers with a boss at the end. Also, he doesn't give you the Z crystal, you don't even have to get it in the first place, and getting the crystal doesn't increase the levels of traded pokemon you can use or change the stock of the pokemarts. It's not a trial.
