I guess because they were out of the way in Johto and are associated more with Hoenn's diving.

Slugma's another one people say for similar reasons, and Skarmory because it was also version exclusive and the rest of Steven's team is Gen 3.

I skipped gen 5 and playing through Y I could mostly guess which ones I hadn't seen were from gen 5 and which were from gen 6, except Binacle/Barbaracle

I confuse Gen V-mon for Gen VI-mon since I skipped Gen V. Whimsicott being part-Fairy made me go all in assuming it was a Kalosmon.

I had this card when I was younger, and for some reason in my memories it blended into my gen 1 cards. I though it was from Kanto for the longest time.

Do you/did you watch the anime? Kecleon was in a Johto episode before Gen 3 came out.

Most of my childhood was spent playing and replaying Colosseum, so most of Johto and Hoenn just kinda blended together for me.

Tbqh senpai Gen 2 was my first gen and until the HGSS remakes I thought a good 1/4th of the roster were from Hoenn
The in-game dex in Johto is so irredeemably shit when a large part of the roster is hidden. I feel like Sun/Moon might get the same problem for kids in a few years, since it has some of the same issues.
