The reason most people raise GSC and HGSS is because of the reward of getting to go to Kanto and seeing how everything has changed. Almost every location has some sort of lore and history to it. Ruins of Alph are still the best ruins in the series.

The 8 gym leaders in Johto had a total of 23 pokemon. Only 4 of which were new. That's sad when over 40% of pokemon availible in the games are brand new. Falkner could have used a Noctowl. Bugsy could have had a Ledian or Ariados. Morty could have battled with a Misdreavus. Chuck could have used a Hitmontop or Heracross. When the whole point of the game was "100 new pokemon!" you would think they'd have done important characters show them off

The Sprout Tower guy uses Hoothoot. An E4 member uses an Ariados. The Karate King in Mt Mortar gives you a Tyrogue. Stuff like that happens all over. Not to mention plenty of Kanto people use Johto mons.

The lack of anyone using Misdreavus and Heracross is pretty weird though.

Ruins of Alph seemed really cool to me when I was younger, but it was a huge dissapointment when I found out how shitty Unknown were. I just wish they had some cool secret to them, like a a good reward or legendary pokemon waiting. Also I wish there were fossil pokemon found there in GSC like in HGSS

My only real issue with the Ruins were that you triggered things by bringing legendaries to it rather than the other way around.

Also we never learn why Suicune and Ho-oh are related to the Unown.
