I mean, nobody said you had to buy the games digitally. You don't need to upgrade your SD card to use any gen 6 or 7 game, and Bank exists in a cloud system, hence why they ask for 5 dollars a year for maintenance of said cloud server. And I don't care what people think, 40 dollars for a fresh-off-the-presses portable video game is fine if it's a main series pokémon game.

The morality of a system you have to pay for annually in order to transfer pokémon to new generations is definitely debatable, I agree, but so is requiring having two whole systems and games at the same time in order to transfer.

In the end, I don't really have a problem with this system. It's pretty well thought out, and is leagues more palpable than some of the tactics I see other companies pulling in this territory.
