Explain how badges work in-game, in a post SuMo world. Badge have acted as a limiter-removal system of sorts in previous games, although how exactly is never known. Beyond the implication that Pokemon you train recognize the badge, it still doesn't make sense how a metal trinket or stamp in Sun & Moon makes pokemon of higher levels listen to you.

Let's start from the beginning. Ash/ Red collect all of the Kanto badges and beat the Indigo league. We can infer from G/S/HG/SS that another regions' badges allow you to train Pokemon as much as you want: Both Red and Gold take their teams across Kanto and Johto, Red training his team to lvl 80+ on Mt. Silver and Gold being able to challenge the Kanto league at whatever level he wants.
Jumping into the anime canon for a sec, Ash has almost if not all the badges from each region, and doesn't need them anyway as we've established a full set from any region counts. Regardless, he's got at least 30 of them. Also, Ash has taken his Pikachu on every adventure and at this point it's level for sure is 100.
Let's ask some questions:
>Why do badges let you train higher?
>How do Giovanni, Archie, Maxie, Cyrus, Ghestis, N, Zinnia, and Guzma have higher leveled pokemon and progressively higher leveled Pokemon without badges?
>How would Deoxys, Giratina, any fossil, space, tim, God, and Ultra Beast recognize the authority behind a badge?
Final reminder that Badges are canon mechanics in both anime and game, see: Ash's Charizard, the games.

And Ash's Charizard?

Anime thing, nothing to do with game rules.
Well, Pokemon only listen to you if you have a certain amount of z-crystals (minus the pikachu one), so its no far stretch to assume badges work the same way.
Let's not forget the curious case of Kanto badges, which apparently raise your pokemon's stats.
It's entirely possible that Giovanni, Maxie and Archie either bought or earned their badges when they were younger. Cyrus too, even though he seems to hate people and wouldn't go on a traditional pokemon journey. Forgot to mention Lysander but he's back there with Giovanni on the bought/ear peculation, though given his not-at-all unforeseen heel turn at the end, he likely earned badges. Consider that creating a league and handing out badges aren't necessary, as evidenced by Su/Mo and the thought behind how the first pokemon league and it's gym leaders must have come to be. Guzma went through the trials and that explains away his levels, but what of N, a sheltered prince? Zinnia, and her dragon people? Any of the mooks, unless youngster Joey and the like is where the villain team recruit from? How about AZ, the 3000 year old king?

It's the stamps, says so in the passport. Despite what they seem like, the Z-crystals don't function as badges or else you'd have an incremental level allowance like previous games. The first stamp allows for pokemon up to level 35, and the next to 50. Also remember that the trial captains hand out the crystals, but there are a nonstandard amount of captains before each Grand trial, i.e. Mele: 1, Akale: 3, Ulaula, 2, etc.
