First thing you should know is that most gen 7 mons are slow. Some of them are workable despite this but it can bite you in the ass.

Toucannon gets strong moves and later on multihit moves to abuse but is still unfortunately slow. It has high attack however and turns Guzma's team to goo.

You get eviolite somewhat early on so if you grab a Magmar you can carry it for a while. You get the Magmarizer and Electrilizer on the fourth island, I think.

Alolan Marowak doesn't learn a ghost-type move until 53 or something. You need to use the move relearner to actually have it learn its signature attack (he's located at the end of the game pretty much).

Salazzle is good. Mimikyu is incredibly good. Magnemite is great.

What pokemon do you actually like? We should find 2 or 3 pokemon you like that form a good core (synergize well, whether defensively or offensively), fill in the team with some mons to support them, and some checks to major threats you see to then

I just pick a theme and build around that. For example with all the new cute and mustached pokemon in this generation, you could make a mustache team.
