He is legitimately the first "final battle" that I lost to in a Pokemon game. Not even Cynthia was this brutal. And I played with EXP Share on - I was 5 levels over his team. Granted, I was playing on Handicapped Mode because I used nothing but Alolan Pokemon.

In hindsight, I'm glad I lost though. Was a nice challenge. Reconfigured my strategy and beat him without using items. I felt accomplished.

I didn't need to grind. I had a varied enough team to be able to deal with him despite being underleveled. I think my strongest was a Lv 46 or 48 Alolan Golem by his battle.

I saved before him and was able to take him out, and I only had 5 mons. It's just about knowing how to tackle his team. I even had Set on. I think anyone can do this, and found fun in it.

It bothers me more that no trainers have more than 2 Pokemon. I'd rather have a smooth difficulty gradient than a game that's piss easy 98% of the time with a small number of insane difficulty spikes.

I skipped all wild encounters and only fought npcs with exp turned off. Towards the end of the game I would lose a battle here and there, but all I'd end up doing was switch my lead and memorize what didn't work against opponents pokemon and I was good. I was pretty much 10 levels lower than the elite four and I never had a water pokemon on my team. Not one Pokemon with a water move on my team.

The worst trouble I had was that stupid old lady with the Carbink near the ranch, holy shit that piece of shit was annoying. I lost like 5 times to that bitch.

I was over leveled for most of the game because I was filling out the pokedex. However that lead to most of my mons sitting at 50 in the PC while I took around others to evolve.

By the time I took on the Elite 4. Incineroars 10-20 level advantage hardly meant shit to any of them, Hala damn near tore him to shreds with Hariyama. I won and didn't wipe but holy shit did I learn then and there.

I went with a Primarina as a starter and EXP share on. Somehow it ended up with a steel type Hidden power which gave it great type coverage through the entire game. Rest of the team was pretty evenly leveled compared to opponents.

Cleared the entire game without losing to a single trainer, though Kukui was a seriously close call.

In short, Primarina is easy mode.

I lived the same pains you did. My starter was litten and I wasn't a Primarina to dunk my team with a gross special attack value against a mostly physical team.
Lower it's sp. attack by 2 stages with Mismagius being the only mon on my team that could outspeed it and toxic stalled to kill it. Smooth sailing after. Took me around 3 hours to learn this strat.

I beat him with a team of pokes with levels 46-48 but had to use a shit ton of healing items. I had not used a single max revive and used them all on this battle. However maybe you should grind because to do anything post game you have to beat trainers with pokemon on levels 61+

Went in with a team around level 42-45. Came out with them around 44-49. Had to burn like 4 revives and super potions after every E4 member.

I had to keep resetting until his Lyncaroc would open up with Stone Edge instead of Stealth Rock since half my team is Rock weak. I figured out that the AI would use Stealth Rock only if it couldn't OHKO your pokemon AND it wouldn't be OHKO in return. It'd use an attacking move if it could kill your Pokemon or if it was going to die. Opened up with Kommo-o and Focus Blast. If Stealth Rock went up, it was Focus Miss. If it Stone Edged, then it hit.

I think it was Nanu who said that for the League you need to go all out.

I hadn't by that point, I restricted myself from using TM's until late game and only when my Pokemons movesets were terrible. Wasn't able to use Z-Moves unless it was used as a finishing move on the final Pokemon of an important battle like against Lusamine.

But for the League I had to go all out, my moves sucked so I finally used TM's, did some grinding to gain a few levels because I was low 40's when I reached the League, also allowed myself to use Z-Moves whenever I needed (although I tried to save them for finishers), and finally let myself box my starter because it pissed me off to much.

Grind if you have to, just try not to overlevel to leave a challenge.

This game had a really good difficulty curve as it went on. I mean, I was so disappointed on Mele'mele, almost every single trainer you fight had only one pokemon, and that shit continued partway through Akala Island. I thought the game was going to be even easier than gen 6. But it got pretty damn good with some of the totem pokemon, and Poni island was like a whole new difficulty setting.

I just finished this and was kind of worried that I fucked up or was just bad. The first three islands were a piece of cake, I was like 5 levels over everything so I picked up a couple weaker guys to train up and then got fucked by Guzma on aether paradise when the enemies' levels started shooting the fuck up, first black out. I was probably playing a little dumb and really didn't expect to have so much trouble with a Masquerain.

Had a real rough time with the E4 for two or three attempts, then changed my order and go through them pretty easy, and barely scraped by against Kukui with heavy item use with a team pretty much entirely around level 50. Just Alolans, too. I guess that matters? I've been on blackout until I finished and didn't know they were apparently so subpar. I could feel it with Wishiwashi, anyway.

I think it really depends on whether you're catching lots of Pokemon. I was actively seeking out any new Pokemon and you level-up in the process because that is now grinding (the downside of catch exp). Without any exp share I was in the good range by endgame, 5-7 levels below designated strong trainers and 3-5 behind single-Pokemon route trainers. Those seem right to me, their Pokemon should be at those advantages since they take so many other handicaps against you.

You probably hit that range with exp share on if you don't battle wild Pokemon except to build a team you knew beforehand.

This is how i made it through Kukui's Incineroar. It one-shotted two of my remaining three mons, so i sent out Mudsdale and repeatedly healed him until my defense was high enough to survive more than two turns.

Grind at Poni Wilds. Almost everything there is fully evolved, and gives stupid amounts of EXP.

I played with EXP share off for the most part, only turning it on when I was noticeably underleveled, and then switching it back off again. With that, I was still about 1-2 levels below the E4 by endgame, but Kukui wasn't too bad, save for Incineroar.

That being said, did you max your team's affection? Because that increases the amount of EXP they receive by like, 1.3x, iirc. And maxing affection isn't hard to do when you just do a quick Refresh every time it prompts or the option shakes on the menu. It's even easier if you have Rainbow Beans from Pelago; after two of those and a patterned bean, it will max out affection on its own.

Even with exp share on, I found myself RIGHT at the same levels as the Elite 4. EXP share on is now just normal instead of easy. Glad gamefreak made the exp the way it is.

First time I battled Kukui i got swept by his Snorlax.
Second time, I plowed through him until my Magneton survived 6 hits STRAIGHT with the power of love (Magneton touched it out so you wouldn't be sad). Six in a row. I couldn't believe it.

This was the hardest Pokemon game yet I think. I left exp share on because I like sneaking by the route trainers. I left battle style on set for a majority of the game (up until kukui).
Wishiwashi was pretty easy for me because I didn't get the alomomola ally called, but I had serious trouble with Lurantis, Mimikyu, and the Poni Island Grand Trial. Mimikyu fucked my shit up more than 5 times because I was too stubborn to grind levels.
I beat the Elite 4 on my second try, the Flying type leader was harder than Kukui in my opinion, I lost to her the first time but I think I only beat Kukui because I took Lunala out of the box and I spammed items.

Depends. There are a few areas you can skip over that have trainers, so if you face all those and do some dex completion, you can get overlevelled and sweep shit easily

If you just turn off exp share when you match levels, then turn it back on when lagging behind though, you generally match the level curve til about Lusamine
